Keep the C2 set of confusable words straight by meaning, not memory.

Learning outcomes

You write “the migration will effect every downstream service” in a design doc, mean that it will change them, and a reviewer quietly reads it as “the migration will bring about every service,” which is not what you meant at all. You did not misspell anything. You picked the wrong word from a pair that sound nearly identical and look nearly identical, and the meaning slid sideways. English is full of these traps, and at the advanced level they are the difference between writing that is merely fluent and writing that is exact. This page sorts the highest-value pairs into the kind of test that resolves each one, so you stop guessing.

Before we dive in

The trouble with these pairs is that nothing on the surface warns you. “Affect” and “effect” differ by one letter. “Discreet” and “discrete” are anagrams of the same letters. “Its” and “it’s” differ by an apostrophe a spellchecker will happily accept either way. The eye glides over them, the meaning is close enough to seem fine, and the error survives all the way into the shipped doc. A learner who has the two words filed as “roughly the same thing” cannot self-correct, because nothing feels wrong.

So the fix is not memorizing a long list and hoping. It is noticing what kind of confusion each pair is, because each kind has its own resolving test. Some pairs are confused purely by meaning: the words play different roles, and once you know the role you are safe. Some are confused by grammar: the choice depends on what kind of noun or verb sits next to the word, so you check the grammar, not the meaning. And some are confused by form: a singular and its irregular plural that learners use interchangeably. Three kinds of confusion, three kinds of test.

One more framing before the pairs. Not every “rule” here is a genuine distinction. A few are real and worth defending, where mixing the words actually changes meaning. A few others are contested shibboleths: a usage that a strict editor will flag, but that careful writers have used for centuries and that the evidence does not support as an error. Knowing which is which lets you spend your care where it counts and relax where it does not.

The confusable map: what kind of confusion is it?

Before the individual pairs, fix the three categories in mind, because the category tells you which test to run.

Three kinds of confusable pair, each with its own resolving test. Sort the pair first, then run the test for its kind.

The map is the strategy for the whole page. When a pair trips you, do not reach blindly for the word that feels right. Ask first which branch the pair is on. If it is a meaning-pair, the question is which sense you intend. If it is grammar-sensitive, the question is about the word next to it, not the word itself. If it is a number word, the question is simply one or many. The sections below walk each branch in turn.

Meaning-pairs: two words, two senses

These pairs are confused because the words sound alike, but they carry genuinely different meanings or play different grammatical roles. Get the role right and the choice is settled. Each pair below comes with a memory hook, because under the pressure of writing you need the right word to surface fast, not a rule to reason through.

1. affect and effect, the classic trap

This is the most-missed pair in professional writing, so it earns the most care. In their common uses, “affect” is a verb meaning to influence, and “effect” is a noun meaning the result. The schema migration affects the services (it influences them); the effect of the migration is slower writes (the result is slower writes). The trap is that both words exist on both sides of the line in rare uses, which is why a simple “affect is the verb” almost works but not quite.

Here is the decision test, drawn as a flowchart, that resolves the common case in one or two questions.

The affect-versus-effect test. Most of the time the first question settles it: a verb is affect, a noun is effect.

Run the test on the opening example. “The migration will [blank] every service”: the blank is the action the migration does to the services, so it is a verb, so it is “affect.” The reviewer’s misreading came from the rare verb “effect,” to bring about, which would mean the migration created the services from nothing. The memory hook locks it in: A for Affect is for Action (the verb), and E for Effect is for the End result (the noun). If you can put “the” or “an” in front of the word, you want the noun “effect.”

The rare uses that break the simple rule

“Affect” is also a noun in psychology, meaning observable emotion (“a flat affect”), and “effect” is also a verb meaning to bring about (“effect change,” “effect a rescue”). These are genuine but rare. The everyday rule, verb is affect and noun is effect, is right the overwhelming majority of the time; just do not be surprised when you meet “effect change” in a formal report, because it is correct, not a typo.

2. imply and infer, the speaker and the listener

“Imply” and “infer” describe the two ends of a single act of suggestion. The speaker, or the writer, or the data, implies: it hints at something without stating it outright. The listener, or the reader, infers: it draws that hidden thing out as a conclusion. They are not interchangeable, because they happen at opposite ends of the same line. If your manager’s silence on a deadline implies it has slipped, you infer from that silence that it has slipped.

The memory hook runs on the first letters. The person who implies is putting the meaning in, packing it into what they say. The person who infers is taking it out, inward, into their own head as a conclusion. So a sender implies and a receiver infers; reversing them (“are you inferring that I missed the bug?”) is the common error, and it asks the listener to do the speaker’s job.

3. assure, ensure, insure, and other tight clusters

A few confusables come in clusters of three rather than pairs, and they reward a single sharp test. “Assure,” “ensure,” and “insure” all touch the idea of making something safe or certain, but each takes a different object.

The assure-ensure-insure test. The first question (is there a person being reassured?) separates assure; the second separates the money sense, insure, from the general sense, ensure.

The hook chains off the first vowels and objects. You assure a person (you put them at ease). You ensure a result (you make sure of it). You insure against loss (think insurance). The most common slip is using “insure” for the everyday “make certain” sense, which American usage increasingly tolerates but which a careful writer keeps for the money sense alone. Another tight pair in this family is “elicit” and “illicit”: you elicit a response (you draw it out, as in a good question elicits honest answers), while illicit means illegal (the il prefix is the negation, as in illegal and illogical). They sound identical but one is a verb about drawing out and the other an adjective about breaking the law.

4. the rest of the meaning-pairs, with memory hooks

The remaining meaning-pairs follow the same logic: two roles, one resolving idea, one hook. The table collects them so you can scan, sort, and return to it. Read the hook column first, then check the example to see the hook in action.

Scan the hook column and a pattern appears: most hooks hang on a letter or a sound shared between the word and its meaning. That is deliberate, because a hook tied to the spelling survives the moment of doubt better than a definition you have to recall. Two of these earn special note. “Comprise” is the one most professionals get wrong: the whole comprises its parts, so “the system comprises three layers” is right, while the very common “is comprised of” is condemned by careful usage guides, which prefer “is composed of” or plain “comprises.” And “e.g.” versus “i.e.” trips people daily in tickets and docs: “e.g.” opens a non-exhaustive example, while “i.e.” restates the whole thing in other words, so they are not swappable.

Grammar-sensitive pairs: the rule decides

The second branch of the map is different in kind. Here the two words are not separated by meaning you can picture but by the grammar of the word sitting next to them. You do not ask “which do I mean?”; you ask “what kind of noun or verb is this?” and the answer picks the word for you.

The clearest case is “fewer” and “less.” The traditional rule is mechanical: use fewer for things you can count one by one (fewer bugs, fewer engineers, fewer tickets) and less for amounts you measure but do not count (less memory, less latency, less effort). The test is whether you could put a number in front: “three bugs” works, so “fewer bugs”; “three memories” does not mean three units of RAM, so “less memory.” The supermarket sign “10 items or less” is the famous violation, since items are countable.

Grammar-sensitive pairs: the choice depends on the grammar of the neighbouring word, not on a picture in your head.

Of these, “its” and “it’s” is the one to internalize first, because it is both the most common error and a real distinction that changes meaning. “Its” is possessive, like “his” and “hers,” and takes no apostrophe; “it’s” is only ever “it is” or “it has.” The reliable test: expand the apostrophe to “it is” and read the sentence. “It is config was wrong” is nonsense, so you want the possessive “its.” The other pairs reward the same move of looking at the neighbour: “lay” and “lie” hinge on whether there is an object (you lay a thing down, but you lie down yourself), and “bring” and “take” hinge on which way the thing moves relative to you.

Less and fewer: the contested reality

The fewer-with-count, less-with-amount rule is worth following in careful writing, but treat it as a style preference, not a law of grammar. Garner’s usage guidance notes that “less” with count nouns is extremely widespread and has a long history (the rule itself was only proposed in 1770, as a preference, not a description of how English worked). Phrases like “less than ten items” and “one less thing to worry about” are normal, and “fewer” can even sound stiff before a number that reads as a single amount, as in “less than three weeks.” So apply the distinction in formal documents, where a strict reader expects it, but do not treat every “less” before a count noun as an error in speech or casual writing. This is the same descriptive lens you would bring to the that-versus-which dispute in relative clauses at C2 and to comma and apostrophe rules in advanced punctuation.

Number words: one, then many

The third branch is the simplest in idea and the easiest to slip on in fast writing. A handful of words borrowed from Latin and Greek keep their original singular and plural forms, and the trap is using the plural as if it were singular. “Criteria” is plural; the singular is “criterion.” “Phenomena” is plural; the singular is “phenomenon.” “Data” is the plural of “datum,” though this one is special and shifting.

The hook is to remember the singular, since the plural is the form you meet more often and the one that sounds natural alone. One criterion, several criteria: “the main criterion is latency” (one), “the criteria are latency and cost” (several). One phenomenon, several phenomena: “this phenomenon is new” (one), “these phenomena recur” (several). The frequent error is “the criteria is” or “a criteria,” which treats the plural as a singular, the way “a data” would jar a careful reader.

Data is the exception in motion

“Data” began as the plural of “datum,” so the strict form is “the data are clear.” But in everyday and even much technical writing, “data” is now widely treated as an uncountable mass noun, like “information,” taking a singular verb: “the data is clear.” Both are defensible; many style guides now accept the singular. “Datum” survives mainly in surveying and statistics. So unlike “criterion” and “phenomenon,” where the singular is alive and the plural error is real, “data” has largely shed its plural, and you can pick the singular verb without apology in most contexts. Match whichever your team or house style uses, and be consistent within a document.

Mental Model: real distinctions versus shibboleths

Here is the reframe that turns this from a list to memorize into a skill you can apply. Not every confusable pair is the same kind of thing. Some are real distinctions, where choosing the wrong word genuinely changes or muddies the meaning, and a careful reader can be actively misled. Others are shibboleths: usages that a strict editor will mark, and that signal carefulness when you observe them, but where the “wrong” version is so well established that it communicates perfectly and has impeccable historical credentials.

The real distinctions are the ones to defend without compromise. “Its” and “it’s” is real: the apostrophe carries grammatical meaning, and getting it wrong looks like an error to everyone. “Affect” and “effect,” “principal” and “principle,” “discreet” and “discrete,” “complement” and “compliment,” “stationary” and “stationery”: all real, because the two words mean different things and swapping them produces a true mistake, sometimes a comic one. “Elicit” and “illicit,” “imply” and “infer”: real, because the roles are genuinely distinct. For these, the memory hooks are worth drilling, because the cost of error is a reader who is misled or who quietly loses trust in your care.

The shibboleths are where you can ease off. “Less” with a count noun is the clearest case: a strict editor prefers “fewer,” but “less” is centuries old in this use and never causes a misunderstanding. The “that” versus “which” distinction in restrictive clauses is largely an American editorial convention, not a rule of the language, covered in relative clauses at C2. For these, the practical move is to observe the preferred form in formal writing, where a strict reader is watching, and not to worry about it in speech or casual prose, and never to “correct” someone else’s correct usage. Knowing the difference between a real distinction and a shibboleth is what separates a careful writer from a fussy one. This is the same precision instinct developed in precision vocabulary, applied to the narrow band where two words are almost the same.

A teammate's PR description reads: 'This change will [blank] the rate limiter, so we should see [blank] dropped requests.' You mean it will influence the limiter, and a smaller count of dropped requests. Which fills the blanks correctly?

Common mistakes

The first mistake is its and it’s, the single most frequent confusable error in professional writing. The cause is that the apostrophe feels like it should signal possession, as it does in “the server’s config,” but with “it” the possessive is “its” with no apostrophe, and “it’s” is only ever “it is” or “it has.” The fix is the expansion test: read “it’s” aloud as “it is” and keep it only if the sentence still makes sense.

The second is affect and effect, missed even by strong writers because the words are a single letter apart and both can be either part of speech in rare uses. The fix is the action test: if the word is the thing being done, a verb, it is almost always “affect”; if you could put “the” or “an” in front, it is the noun “effect.”

The third is comprise of, as in “the system is comprised of three layers.” The whole comprises its parts directly, with no “of,” so the careful forms are “the system comprises three layers” or “the system is composed of three layers.” “Is comprised of” is so common that many accept it, but in formal writing it still reads as an error to careful editors, so prefer “comprises” or “composed of.”

The fourth is fewer and less, but with the lighter touch the mental model prescribes: use “fewer” for count nouns in formal writing (fewer bugs, fewer requests), while knowing that “less” with a count noun is an old and widespread usage, not a true grammatical error, so you neither stress over it in casual speech nor police it in others.

The fifth is e.g. and i.e., swapped constantly in tickets and comments. “E.g.” introduces one or more examples from a larger set (Example Given); “i.e.” restates the whole thing in other words (that is, in effect). If you can replace the marker with “for example,” use “e.g.”; if you can replace it with “in other words,” use “i.e.”
